The areas [32 villages of Jajmau tannery areas] are absolutely rural areas just adjacent to Jajmau and situated near bank of river Ganges and these are so deprived that neither these are under administration of Block level nor under urban administration i.e. Municipal corporation.There is no Government/Pvt. Health infrastructure,education services and other basic civic amenities.Due to chrome vi their fruit and other conventional crops were diminished and underground water to drink was also contaminated with chrome vi which caused great health hazards to community.
Due to above reasons we worked to save their livelihood and providing them safe drinking water and saving environment from chrome vi menace through remediation of ground water.
To create employment generation for sufferers of chrome vi menace.
To reduce water and soil pollution.
To protect water and soil from chrome vi menace
To reduce water & soil pollution and in agriculture produce,Laboratory scale and field tests were carried out and reports on reduction of chrome vi contents were demonstrated.
To protect water ,water filters were developed and were tested in field and these filters were found successful and then demonstration about how to use it ,was done to the beneficiaries of the suffering areas..
Training about refilling of filters was given to youths of the suffering community so that the work of cleaning and recharging the filters in lab.,can be done by trained youths of community at field level and they can earn money from this activity and project’s objectives can be sustained and replicated.Training of preparation of these filters were also given to youths of suffering community.
Self help groups were formed of women and youths ,through SHGs trained youths have taken loan for making new filters and recycling of filters and now they are earning Rs.2000/ to 3000/ per month from Sale & recycling of these filters in neighbouring areas and people are getting safe drinking water free from chrome vi,thus project’s objectives are being sustained and replicated.Contaminated soil of farmers was also remediated through reduction [cosolvent method] converting chrome vi into chrome iii and thus reviving the soil in the previous fertile mode.
Now people who are using chrome filters ,are well safe ,while before the commencement of project every member of family was suffering from skin diseases,gastric problems and eye rashes etc.They give us thanks for developing these filters and remediation of soil.
