Summary:

COOPRESER LTDA was born in Bucaramanga’s city dumpster “El Carrasco”, with some population that scraped on the garbage there. Due to the need of drawing this population out of the dumpster, the company in charge of garbage final disposal of the city’s dumpster, requested help to the state university “Universidad Industrial de Santander” in order to elaborate a social economic profile of this population, and thus seek personal solution to each one of the “basuriegos”[1][1]. The state University found possible to look for a group alternative and, through a participative action research process, achieved not only changes in population’s aggressive, criminal and antisocial behavior but also  the  setting of the idea of organization. That was the foundation of this experience, in which the retrieve of recycling material, including former communitarian training on the subject, was established as an occupational alternative. This process began at Fontana (Bucaramanga’s neighborhood) and, little by little, was spread, until reaching coverage of about thirty six thousand homes in Bucaramanga’s urban area. It also established direct selling of recovered material to big companies in need of recycled raw material. Initial stage of COOPRESER was pretty difficult providing that, in addition to getting the “basuriego” back to society, it was necessary to educate general public to understand the importance of waste recycling processes. It is imperative to state that governmental support has been sporadic and poor in comparison to the environmental worry displayed by the cooperative. In order to self-funding, the cooperative had to find other occupational alternatives and focused on cleaning services, under contracts with the government, private companies, schools among others. The strategy of combining recycling and cleaning services has allowed the COPRESER associate to enjoy social security (health, pension, family welfare, occupational hazard benefit) and labor benefits (bonuses, redundancy money, paid vacations)

[1][1] The term “Basuriego” refers to the person who lives from what he scraps in the garbage. This term was established to name people who actually lived there in the city dumpster
