Summary:

TheBricklayers and Laborers Nonprofit Housing Corp. was founded by a localconstruction union to create affordable housing targeted for low- andmoderate-income first-time home buyers in downtown Boston. The Back of the Hillproject created 165 rowhouses in at a previously idle property. The CharlestownNavy Yard project created 50 affordable townhouses at a vacant formerindustrial site on the waterfront. All units were priced at cost, below thecity median housing cost of $170,000. Costs were kept down through city housingsubsidies, a land donation from a private medical foundation, leveraged unionpension funds, and other strategies. Not only are the units affordable, theyhave won several architectural awards and have encouraged a sense of communityfor their residents.
