The highest priority for UN-HABITAT's Water and Sanitation programme
is improving access to safe water and helping provide adequate sanitation to millions
of low-income urban dwellers and measuring that impact. World leaders meeting
at the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000 committed themselves to attaining
the Millennium Development Goal 7, target 10 which aims to reduce
by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water

An agreement has been signed between the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat, UN-HABITAT, the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the governments of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda, which will set the stage for the expansion of the Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative (LVWATSAN) to 15 towns in five countries.
Speaking at a reception he hosted at the Elysée in Paris for delegates attending a prelude meeting of the 6th World Water Forum, the president expressed his concerns about water issues which could be worsened by the issues such as population growth, environmental pollution, and climate change.
