Event Description

Current urban energy usage patterns are widely recognized to be unsustainable, especially in the face of the challenges posed by globalization, climate change and rapid rates of urbanization. There is an urgent need for new solutions and approaches to energy usage patterns and provision for cities both in the South and the North. This event will bring together researchers and practitioners from around the world to disseminate and discuss best practice examples of new and innovative ways of achieving sustainable energy usage. The format of the event will include presentations of best practice examples, followed by a discussion of the key outcomes and lessons from the case studies. Finally, the discussion will aim to highlight key strategic pathways for cities engaged in a transition towards sustainable patterns of urbanization.

2. What were the core issues identified in your event as they relate to the theme and sub-themes of WUFIII?

Main issue of cities as leverage points to tackle climate change, Energy Efficiency models and how to create behaviour change; rural - urban linkages and how viable rural communities can slow urban migration. Transportation challenges in New Delhi and the need for political will. Key question of how to push energy to the top of the urban development agenda

3. What were the main points raised by panellists and participants in relation to these different issues? What new ideas have been generated as a result of the discussion?

Following presentations (3) panellists responded to around 35 questions on range of themes including; role of citizens and NGOs as agents / catalysts for change; how to increase uptake of renewable energy in cities; how to demonstrate community benefits to ramp up the social agenda for action; role of local and national govt in urban energy issues

4. What process steps have been identified in your event that could help turn ideas into operational reality?

Developing models of best practice - promoting joined up thinking across government and other agencies. Resources to support engagement of stakeholders
