Key Highlights

  1. Estimated no of participants: 75
  2. Stakeholder group representation at the event : Donors, academics, professionals
  3. What were the expected objectives : Engage the Urban Development Timeline knowledge management framework to share comparative international best practices for urban development.
  4. What did the networking event achieve: Urban practitioners representing an array of global perspectives worked in small groups to exchange development practices. Individuals created and strengthened relationships and new partnerships developed for the continuation of shared experiences.

2. What were the core issues identified in your event as they relate to the theme and sub-themes of WUFIII? The Urban Development Timelines provide a framework that facilitates the application of ideas into action . All three sub-themes: social inclusion and cohesion, partnership and finance, urban growth and the environment are captured in the timelines. The factors that affect policies, programs, institutions, and the methods and tools used for implementation were all central to the networking event; rather than PADCO defining these issues, we served as facilitators the elicited the comparative understanding of the participants who identified the obstacles to successful development and the practices used to overcome these challenges.

3. What were the main points raised by panellists and participants in relation to these different issues? What new ideas have been generated as a result of the discussion?

Participants demonstrated that the general understanding of issues affecting urban development is quite sophisticated. The urban development practitioner today must be critically aware that the standard for successful development is high, and that the skills needed to meet this challenge require an increasing amount of creativity, flexibility, and vision.

4. What process steps have been identified in your event that could help turn ideas into operational reality?

Continued contributions to the Urban Development Timeline permit practitioners on any country access relevant and timely methods for development. These can be reviewed and modified with little effort by the user in the implementation of any urban development program.
