The Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Dr. Joan Clos visited the Kingdom of Bahrain on 8 May 2012 and met with His Royal Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al-Khalifa, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, where His Royal Highness reiterated his strong support to UN-Habitat activities in the Arab region. UN-Habitat graciously accepted by the contribution of the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which represents a major vote of confidence, and hopes that this will encourage other countries to join its efforts in the region.
UN-Habitat has set up an Advisory Board to help prioritise its activities and to ensure transparent use of the funds received. The first meeting of the Board on 8 February 2012 in New York was chaired by Dr. Clos, and attended by 21 Member States and the European Union. So far, Bahrain, Belgium, the European Commission, France, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka have confirmed their support for UN-Habitat's work in the occupied Palestinian territory. The next meeting of the Advisory Board is planned for later this year in the margin of the General Assembly. |
