About 700 people recently gathered in the Haitian capital This event was organized by the Ministry of Planning and External Cooperation in Haiti with the support of UN-HABITAT and United Nations Development Programme as part of the strategic planning exercise for the reconstruction and development of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.
The Forum was preceded by a series of extensive consultations involving 600 Haitians from all segments: representatives of the private sector, civil society, academics and professionals of architecture and planning, community leaders, but also local and municipal technicians, who had gathered over several months to define and enforce their respective visions for the future of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.
“VIL NOU VLE A” brought together the government, local authorities, partners and citizens to achieve a consensus on a shared vision for the future of the city; the strategic directions; and priority actions that should be taken into consideration and in order to reach an agreement on an Urban Pact.
During the Forum, the Minister of Planning and External Cooperation reiterated, as his main priority, the commitment of the Haitian Government to guarantee the participation of all Haitians in the planning process. The consultations and the Forum will feed the sketches of the development plan and investment plans prepared by the Ministry.
The brochure “VIL NOU VLE A”, which was published at the Forum, summarizes the strategic planning process with the explanation of its various components: vision / strategic guidance / program projects as well as the results of technical work and consultation on the wider metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince to date. This document will evolve following the Forum “VIL NOU VLE A” and throughout the strategic planning process.
A similar participatory process was initiated for secondary cities affected by the earthquake and regional development centers identified in the Action Plan for the National Recovery and Development of Haiti (PARDH).
