The city of Nanning recently hosted a conference on cities.
Co-sponsored by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, "2012 China-ASEAN Forum on Ecological and Livable Cities, Nanning" was attended by participants from relevant ministerial departments, city governments and academic institutions from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Phillipines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, who exchanged ideas and discussed around the theme of "Modern Ecological and Livable Cities”.
Some of the concensus ffrrom the meeting included the recognition that development of ecological and livable cities plays an important and practical role in enhancing the city’s capacity of sustainable development. With the acceleration of urbanization process in China and ASEAN countries, building ecological and livable cities becomes a common subject for the cities of China and ASEAN countries. The efforts and resultant force made by our cities in the development of ecological and livable cities will play a positive role in promoting the capacity of sustainable development in the region.
It was also agreed that the development of ecological and livable cities should be people-oriented. It is an inevitable choice on the path of new urbanization to achieve the harmonious coexistence of human, nature and city, and promote the integration and coordination of urbanization and modern civilization
