Dr. Joan Clos, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UN-Habitat Executive Director, on Thursday participated as a keynote speaker at an international development conference in the United States.
The Executive Director gave the key note speech at the Second Annual International Development Group Conference in Cambridge, Boston (USA), under the title “Unconventional wisdom: Learning in International Development Practice”.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has convened this meeting of leaders from across the world to challenge accepted norms for addressing urban challenges. The conference is hosted for the second year by the International Group in the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning and celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the department’s Special Program in Urban and Regional Studies (SPURS), a program for mid-career urban planners from developing nations.
The conference is organized around intensive face-to-face dialogues and discussions – between policy makers, urban planners, academics and students – focused on case studies such as urban regeneration in Medellin; post-disaster coordination in Haiti; transportation in Chile; and poverty alleviation technologies in the Philippines.
