Local and Regional organizations, in their capacity as governmental stakeholders and gathered in a Global Taskforce for Post 2015 Development Agenda and Towards Habitat III, on Tuesday emphasized their commitment to end extreme poverty in all its forms, to reduce inequalities, in the context of sustainable development, and to contribute to put in place the building blocks of sustained prosperity for all.
As the government bodies with much of the responsibility for meeting many of the MDGs and goals suggested for post 2015, local and regional authorities commit to ensuring local and regional governments address these responsibilities and to demonstrating how poverty reduction, prosperity and sustainable development can be combined.
UN-Habitat and the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) organized this meeting at UN Headquarters in New York at the occasion of the presentation of the report of the High Level Panel Post 2015 to the UN Secretary General. The session gathered over 150 representatives from UN Agencies, member states, civil society organizations and development partners.
The Mayor of Harare and Co-President of UCLG Mr. Muchadeyi Masunda opened the meeting on behalf of local authorities, offering the partnership of local and regional authorities in defining the new development agenda. The Deputy Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Aisa Kacyira Kirabo, pointed out that the battle for sustainability will require the adequate management of urbanization.
On her part, Special Advisor of the UN Secretary General for Post 2015 Development Planning Ms. Amina J Mohamed, celebrated having local governments on board on the development agenda. "Sustainability begins at local level and your partnership is of great value", she said.
The members of the Global Taskforce stressed that democratic, inclusive, accountable and well-resourced institutions, will be essential to achieving development goals for 2015 and beyond. They underlined that local and regional governments need to be acknowledged as essential actors in this process.
