Some 31 students from Kenyan and Swedish universities on Thursday held a one-day exhibition at UN-HABITAT’s Nairobi headquarters showcasing their work towards addressing sustainable urban development. Under UN-HABITAT’s Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation programme, the students the Universities of Lund, Chalmers and Nairobi were showed how studies on design and architecture could be used tools for sustainable urban development. In total 31 students, from various disciplines have been working together with local communities, local authorities and key stakeholders in Kisumu and Homa Bay to assess the needs and priorities of the local communities and to explore various design options for urban development and the provision of basic services. Jens Dymling, Niklas Weser and Jimmie Knatsson, architecture students from University of Lund, explained how they have been involved with seeking ways for sustainable management of solid waste in the Obunga slums in Kisumu. “We want to ensure that the people around the area start seeing solid waste as something they can put into economic use and so far the response has been good,” Mr. Dymling said. |
