Background and objectives
Based on the experience acquired in the Essaouira Local Agenda 21 project, the Moroccan Government decided to replicate this project in major urban centres. The cities of Marrakech, Meknes and Agadir were selected to be supported for the preparation of their Local Agendas 21 and this is being extended to the small urban centres in the Marrakech Tensift Al Haouz region.
The project aims at strengthening participatory processes for urban environmental planning and management. It will serve as a basis for improving related national policies and to establish tolls and training curricula.
The Programme supports UN-HABITAT Global Campaigns on Urban Governance and Secure Tenure launched in Casablanca on 4 October 2004. Specifically, the programme will contribute to the implementation of the campaign on Urban Governance.
Together with UNESCO, the programme also supports cultural heritage management of the Ksar Ait Benhaddou and collaborates with the Rabat NEPAD City Project in the preparation of the Rabat Profile within the framework of the NEPAD Sustainable City Programme.
