UN-HABITAT’s Safer Cities Programme and eThekwini Municipality are jointly organising an international conference in the South African city of Durban aimed at keeping up efforts to reduce crime and insecurity in towns and cities around the world. The conference on Sustainable Safety: Municipalities at the Crossroads will be held from 25-28 November.
Delegates will review city safety issues five years after the first International Conference on Urban Crime Prevention in Developing Countries in Johannesburg in 1998, and develop an integrated action plan for Safer Cities in Africa and other regions of the world for 2004-2006.
The conference, which will hear of the experiences of various mayors and municipal experts, will promote sustainable safety as an integral part of strategic municipal planning. It will be seeking to strengthen understanding of the Safer Cities approach, the importance of sustainable safety in the context of good governance, poverty reduction, community mobilisation, information and development programmes.
