Officials of South Africa’s National Council of Provinces today attended a high profile briefing at the UN-HABITAT headquarters in Nairobi where they held talks with top officials of the agency.
The council delegation comprised seven Members of Parliament and the committee secretary Ms. Phumla Nyamza. The MPs were from various political parties. Ms. Nyamza said all provinces were represented with the exception of Kwa Zulu Natal whose MP was unable to attend. The delegation was accompanied by South Africa’s UN-HABITAT representative Leon Jordaan.
The delegation was told about UN-HABITAT’s mandate and its ongoing global projects. During the briefings topical issues on land re-distribution, slums and financing, among others, were discussed with the delegation.
The Council expressed its support for UN-HABITAT’s focus on establishing pro-poor policies to deal with shelter and sustainable human settlements.
