For the residents of Korogocho, one of Nairobi’s largest slums, last Sunday was a special day as they set aside the daily grind of their lives to witness a landmark event where UN-HABITAT and the Government of Italy joined hands to give them a better sports facility. At the occasion to mark the second anniversary of the St. John Sports Society, UN-HABITAT Deputy Executive Director Ms. Inga Bjork-Klevby and the outgoing Italian ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Enrico De Miao pledged their continued support for the initiative. UN-HABITAT and the Safer Nairobi Initiative has embarked on collaboration with St. John's Catholic Church and the Comboni Mission Korogocho, in the upgrading of a sports field and supporting facilities for community youth. The upgrading of the Korogocho sports field is a demonstrative activity in line with the implementation of the city’s Crime Prevention and Urban Safety Strategy and the Safer Spaces and Streets Campaign, which has identified pilot city-wide sports and recreation spaces for upgrading.
