Background and Objectives:

The Water for African Cities is a comprehensive initiative by UN-HABITAT to support local and national governments and their partners in effectively managing the growing urban water crisis. It also strives to help protect threatened water resources and the aquatic ecosystem from the increasing volume of land-based pollution from the cities.

The objective of the second phase is to carry out a pilot project consisting of interventions to be implemented in an integrated manner. This is done to increase access to, mange urban water supply, sanitation (liquid, excreta, garbage) facilities, and services in the low-income area of Accra.

Activities:
The main activities include;

• Implementing pro-poor water and sanitation governance;
• Increasing access to sanitation services;
• Increasing access to affordable drinking water;
• Creating education programmes for water sanitation and hygiene;
• Creation of advocacy, awareness, and urban catchments management.

 Results:

• A platform for the poor to contribute to policy formulation and decision making on water and sanitation issues was created;
• Access to community-based sanitation services for the poor improved;
• Water quality in the Densu River improved;
• Water Demand Management (WDM) procedures adopted and unit established on a national scale;
• Value Based Water Education (VBWE) integrated into the national curricula and made operational in the formal education system;
• Awareness in the wise use of water created in the informal sector.
