Background
The project seeks to strengthen the participation of small-scale farmers in the banana and other fruit-based beverages market. The project seeks to organize farmers into efficient suppliers of raw material for banana and other fruit based processing companies. The project thus improves links between rural products and urban markets.
Objective
Developmental Objective: Add value to banana drinks produced by small-scale banana farmers for urban markets. The overall goal of the project is to alleviate poverty of coffee and banana farmers in the Lake Victoria region through commercialization of banana drinks in urban areas and thus contribute to reducing the rate of rural-to-urban migration in the region.
Immediate Objectives:
- establish 5 collection centers and 2 processing plants for high quality long self-life banana and other fruit- based beverages, link with breeding facilities for improved brew banana varieties and provide services to farmers.
- organize 400 farmers in 3 years; the farms will be turned into viable and certified horticultural business units; they will receive training and support in mobilizing fixed and working capital. The total improved banana area will be at least 100 ha.
- have value added of EUR 27,000 in each country because of increased banana farming for the project.
