Fukuoka, Japan, 10 Aug 07

UN-HABITAT’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, based in the Japanese city of Fukuoka, this month celebrated its 10th anniversary with series of events including a music concert and panel discussions.

The anniversary on 1 August opened with the remarks by Mr. Wataru Aso, Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture, and a keynote address by Mr. Daniel Biau, Director of UN-HABITAT’s Regional and Technical Cooperation Division.

Journalists from 10 Asian Cities – Bangkok, Busan, Dalian, Guangzhou, Ho Chi Minh City, Ipoh, Jakarta, Manila, Singapore and Shanghai – attended a seminar at which they discussed the role media in the context of developing sustainable urban development and promoting city-to-city cooperation in Asia. They were joined by Mr. Hiroyuki Takada, Deputy Mayor of Fukuoka City, and Mr. Kaichi Hashimoto, Deputy Mayor of Kitakyushu City, and other experts.

The celebrations climaxed with a Habitat music jam under the theme, City, culture and music in which local artists and radio stations participated.
