Some 25 newly elected mayors from the Palestinian West Bank Governorates were last week the beneficiaries of a training workshop on leadership and management skills. The one week workshop took place from 4-10 September 2007 in Ramallah, occupied Palestinian territories. It was organized by UN-HABITAT in cooperation with the Association of Palestinian Local Authorities (APLA) and the Ministry of Local Government (MoLG). The objective of the workshop was to enhance the leadership and management skills of elected mayors. UN-HABITAT and UNITAR have joined their forces in organizing this event, and it was made possible with the financial contribution of the government of Korea.
In his opening remarks, Eng. Zeyad Al Bandak, Minister of Local Government, Palestinian National Authority, highlighted the critical role of local authorities in service delivery and underscored the serious need for capacity building to enhance their effectiveness in meeting the needs of their residents and communities. He appreciated and welcomed UN-HABITAT’s and UNITAR’s joint effort in organizing the training event and called up on the participating mayors to make best use of the knowledge and skills they would acquire during the training. The mayors workshop was preceded by a one week of Training of Trainers workshop where 11 trainers were trained with training skills and methodologies, and introduced to UN-HABITAT’s globally popular leadership and management training series. Supported by an international expert and senior trainers, workshop participants were offered the opportunity to learn through couching, and hands on direct involvement in designing, preparing and delivering the various training modules of the course.
