UNEP and UN-HABITAT jointly organized a networking event on “Cities and Climate Change: the road from Bali to Copenhagen” during the fourth session of the World Urban Forum in Nanjing, China. This well attended event brought together city representatives from developed and developing countries, urban researchers and practitioners, and representatives from international organizations to discuss a Local Government Climate Roadmap process, from Bali to Copenhagen with the objective to strengthen the role of local governments in the post-2012 climate agreement. Participants also lively discussed practical measures to address climate change through urban environmental planning, innovative ways of mobilizing finance and technological solutions. The debate during this event showed that local governments are aware of the climate change challenge and call for locally adaptable tools (instead of blank recommendation) and best practice examples supporting them to reduce their GHG.
