New Iranian envoy presents credentials to Tibaijuka Bookmark and Share

The new Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to UN-HABITAT, Mr. Seyed Ali Sharifi Sadati, on Thursday presented his credentials to the Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka.

Exchanging views with the new envoy at the occasion, the Executive Director stated that the Iran played a great role in the transformation of UN-HABITAT into a fully-fledged United Nations programme and expressed the hope that the relationship would be further strengthened during Mr. Sadati’s tenure.

Mrs. Tibaijuka noted that Iran has been a great contributor to UN-HABITAT and expressed the hope that the country would soon revive the Iranian-UH-HABITAT Commission.

The Executive Director informed the envoy that UN-HABITAT has an office for disaster mitigation in Tehran, which focuses on capacity-building, applied research and information in the area of earthquake resistant housing.

She added that there are at present five Iranian organizations with a working relation with UN-HABITAT. They are the Centre for Eco-development Studies and Application, the Urban Planning and Architecture Research Center of Iran, the Women’s Solidarity Association of Iran, the National Habitat Committee, and the International Art and Architecture Research Association.

Presenting him with the agency's key publications, the Executive Director wished him a successful tenure.

Responding, Mr. Sadati expressed confidence that the UN-HABITAT Office in Tehran would play a very important role in promoting organization’s activities both in Iran and throughout the region. He conveyed the Iranian Minister of Housing's invitation to the Executive Director to visit the country.
