Barcelona, 3 Nov 09

Mr. Faraj El-Awar, Programme Manager of the Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance and Mr. Tomas Lopez, Junior Professional Officer of the Alliance made a highly successful visit to Spain in the month of October.

During the visit, the two officials met with various government representatives, development aid agencies, water operators, water agencies, and civil society organizations in Barcelona, Cordoba, and Bilbao. The Alliance delegation discussed how different stakeholders of Spanish water and sanitation sector can contribute to Water Operators Partnerships movement, especially in terms of North-South partnerships.

In Bilbao (the capital of the Autonomous Province of the Basque Country), Mr. El-Awar was interviewed by the regional 'DEIA Newspaper' where he gave an overview about the Alliance’s rationale and background, added value of involving northern operators in the global Water Operators Partnerships movement, and what the Basque Country water sector can offer to this initiative. Mr. El-Awar also highlighted some examples of ongoing North-South Water Operators Partnerships in which Spanish operators are involved such as the partnership between 'Consorcio de Aguas de Sevilla' and the Blantyre Water Board (BWB) in Malawi.
