Also briefing the Pakistani envoy, Mr. Junejo, the Executive Director stated that UN-HABITAT was doing a lot of work in Pakistan and that the organization’s relationship with the country has always been good. She stated that the organization’s work in Pakistan is now a bit constrained because of the security situation in the country.
Mrs. Tibaijuka stated that when Pakistan was hit by earthquake in 2005, UN-HABITAT provided the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) of the Government of Pakistan technical support in the housing sector with funds provided by international development partners. She also said that UN-HABITAT provided technical assistance to over 600,000 house owners in the reconstruction of earthquake resistant houses.
The Pakistani envoy, Mr. Junejo, also congratulated Mrs. Tibaijuka on her achievement in UN-HABITAT and at the international level. He expressed appreciation for the good work that UN-HABITAT was doing in Pakistan. He pledged to strengthen the good relations between Pakistan and UN-HABITAT.
Mrs. Tibaijuka congratulated the envoys on their appointment and wished them a successful tenure. She also presented them with flagship publications by UN-HABITAT and her own book entitled: “Building Prosperity - Housing and Economic Development.” She stated that the book stresses the importance of housing in economic development.
The Executive Director also invited the envoys and their countries to participate actively in the Fifth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF5) to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 22 to 26 March 2010.
