The Commissioner General for the Shanghai Expo, Dr Awni Behnam, yesterday met with the Under Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), Mr. SHA Zukang, in New York to discuss preparations for the Summit Forum to be held at the closing of the Shanghai Expo on 31st October.
At the meeting, Mr. SHA informed Dr. Behnam on UNDESA´s arrangements as the UN agency in charge of the Summit Forum and Dr, Behnam updated Mr. SHA on the preparations for UNDESA’s participation at the UN Pavilion. The Summit Forum is being co-hosted by BIE, UNDESA and Shanghai 2010 World Expo National Organizing Committee and will take place in the Shanghai World Expo Park. Its topic, “Urban Innovation and Sustainable Development”, will focus on the key urban living challenges faced by countries around the world. It is also built on the themes of past Expos and enhances both the continuing value of the event and its long heritage.
Guests to be invited include National leaders of China and around 10 current heads of states.
Former heads and ministers of states, mayors of major cities of the world, Commissioners General of the Expo participating countries, representatives of Inter-Governmental Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations, local and foreign business elites, academic experts, future leaders and members of the media will also be invited. The total number of the attendees will reach 1500-2000. The forum will mainly take the form of Convention, Round Table and Panel Discussion. As the macroscopic discussion of global urbanization issues, the Summit Forum will be the climax of the Expo Forums. The “Shanghai Declaration” which is to be announced at the Summit Forum, will be a significant literature of the Expo, based on participants’ understanding on global urban development and on common willingness. |
