The United Nations Pavilion has become the first pavilion at the World Expo to sign up to the Voluntary Emission Reduction Programme. At the Carbon Offsetting Awards in the UN Pavilion last week, organised by the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange and the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, officials from the Voluntary Emission Reduction Action Committee recognised the UN for its efforts at reducing its emissions at the Shanghai World Expo. The Shanghai International Consulting Company has agreed to purchase the UN’s emissions for the construction and operation of the United Nations Pavilion through the Expo Voluntary Emission Reduction Platform. The China Standards Technical Services Company (CSTC) is responsible for verifying the carbon emissions of the United Nations Pavilion. The "One Earth, One UN" theme of the United Nations Pavilion showcases the efforts of all the United Nations agencies and its partner organizations in its system in areas of sustainable development, climate change and urban management. It also reflects the pioneering role of the United Nations Pavilion in the field of lowering carbon emissions and environmental protection. The Expo Voluntary Emission Reduction Programme was opened on the eve of the Expo and provides the public and Expo participants a convenient and reliable channel to participate in emission-reducing activities. Representatives of the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange said that the impact of the Programme is growing as more and more enterprises take participate in the project. |
