Key Chinese and international academics have opened a three day forum to discuss the future of Chongming Island.
Former United Nations Under-Secretary General and Former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Klaus Toepfer and Professor Chen Jiyu Academician of the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research at East China University offered advice and suggestions for the eco-island. Domestic and foreign experts will be invited to further analyze the low carbon development of Chongming Island.
As the world’s largest estuarine alluvial island, Chongming Island is located on the estuary of the Yangtze River, the largest river in China. The island is rich in local resources with a beautiful natural environment, unique wetland landscapes, diversified species and efficient solar and wind power. There are important global bird habitats, providing a large contribution to the protection of global biodiversity.
Professionals have carried out in depth discussion on how to use the unique natural resources of Chongming to build low-carbon cities and towns. Director of Chongming County, Zhao Qi, said at the forum that they will speed up the application of green technologies in Chongming, and that many of the low-carbon technologies, such as clean energy vehicles, used in the World Expo will be gradually extended to Chongming Island.
During the forum, the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission will sign a declaration with UNEP to promote the international cooperation of the construction of Chongming Island. |
