Shanghai, 8 Jul 10

Ni Jianmin, of the All China Federation of Trade Unions and Jane Hodges and Ann Herbert of ILO at the seminar on gender equality and decent work

Vice-President of the All China Federation of Trade Unions, Ni Jianmin, has said that the key to promoting gender equality in the workplace is worker education.

The comments were made at a joint seminar between the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) held in the United Nations Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. ILO Director of Gender Equality, Jane Hodges and ILO Expect on Gender Equality, Angelika Muller also participated in the seminar.

As employment discrimination against women tends to increase in times of crisis and fast
economic growth, the seminar concluded that efforts should be made to address these challenges and create more and better jobs for women and men. Providing equal access to vocational training and skills development remains of primary importance.

The crisis and fast economic growth should not be used as an excuse to even greater inequalities nor undermine women’s acquired rights. The ILO/ACFTU workshop highlighted actions being carried out at the national level to promote equality and decent work for women and men.

Jianmin said: "With rapid economic globalization, the organizations of workers and trade unions among countries communicate more frequently. ACFTU are willing to further develop relations with various national trade unions and ILO based on the principles of independence, equality, mutual respect and non-interference in domestic affairs to make a greater contribution to achieving full recovery of the world economy, promote an enduring peace, common prosperity and harmony in the world. "
