San Jose, 13 Oct 10
UN-HABITAT and the University of Peace (UPEACE) have signed an agreement offering a new course in urban governance for post-graduate students keen to contribute to a better urban future.

BACKGROUND

UN-HABITAT and the University of Peace (UPEACE) have signed an agreement offering a new course in urban governance for post-graduate students keen to contribute to a better urban future.

The agreement was signed last week in San Jose, Costa Rica by John Maresca, the rector and principal of UPEACE and Antoine King the Director of UN-HABITAT’s Programme Support Division.

The new course is crucial, coming at a time when projections show that the world to become two-thirds urban around the year 2050. The new partnership will promote a new Masters of Arts in Sustainable Urban Governance and Peace in the coming academic year. UN-HABITAT will support the programme by helping shape content, sending visiting scholars, or offering internships, and maintaining a strong advocacy for this type of learning.

Headquartered in Costa Rica, the United Nations-mandated University for Peace was established in December 1980 as a Treaty Organization by the UN General Assembly. As determined in the Charter of the University, the mission of the University for Peace is: “to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the United Nations.”
