UN-HABITAT has been recognised by the community of Mahagi, Eastern Congo for its efforts in peace building and land conflict resolution

Community radio station Radio Communautaire la Colombe, presented the award for Best Agency working for Peace in the region of Mahagi, Ituri District to UN-HABITAT for its efforts in 2010.
The jury panel for the award was made up of district elders, administrative authorities of the district, intellectuals, columnists and radio listeners. Awards were also made in the fields of education, health, social, politics, sport, leisure, security and peace.
The award recognised UN-HABITAT’s Programme for Community Empowerment and Consolidation of Peace for working on resolution and peaceful prevention of conflicts that arise over land disputes, raising public awareness and promoting mediation.
UN-HABITAT has been working in the Ituri District for the last 12 months with the people of Djukoth, Angh'al, War' Palar and Mahagi Central in land conflict prevention. The aim is to promote peaceful coexistence among communities living in a post conflict environment through public awareness. The long term goal is to build capacity on issues related to land governance.
The most illustrative case of successful land dispute resolution supported by UN-HABITAT involves the Djupanyaronore, Djuparigi and Djupamula clans’ claims over the Singa pastoral land. The conflict had previously resulted in more than eighty cases of violence.
In the same programme, a campaign of public awareness on the prevention and peaceful resolution of land disputes has been initiated for the benefit of local communities, reinforced by public service announcements, theatrical events and, radio programs, that highlight the need for improved land management, knowledge of the basic principles of land law and peaceful coexistence.
