Nairobi, 17 Feb 11

Dr. Clos (r) receives the credentials from Mr. Garcia-Canturri.

The new Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Spain to UN-HABITAT, Mr. Javier Herrera Garcia-Canturri, on Thursday presented his credentials to the Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos.

Welcoming the new Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Spain to UN-HABITAT, Mr. Javier Herrera Garcia-Canturri on 17 February 2011, Dr. Clos commended Spain for its continued support to UN-HABITAT. For several years now Spain has maintained the position of one of the top 10 contributors to UN-HABITATt. Since 2007, Spain has made earmarked contributions totaling more that USD 58.6 million.

Mr. Garcia-Canturri said that Spain was happy to have Dr. Clos as the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT.

Spain has contributed to the global normative work through improving the management of solid waste in urban areas; the human settlement dimension incorporated in the World Water Development Report 4; and influencing the urban water and sanitation policy agenda. It has also contributed to improving the Water and Sanitation for Latin America and the Caribbean Cities Programme (WATSAN-LAC); and the Water Operators Partnerships in Latin America and the Caribbean (WOPs-LAC).

In April 2010, within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, UN-HABITAT joined the "High Level Conference on urban sustainability and integrated urban regeneration in Europe.”

UN-Habitat also has an office in Barcelona working closely with local governments on decentralisation and access to basic services in Latin America as well as on city-to-city cooperation on urban planning issues.
