Tunisia's new Ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative to UN-HABITAT, Mr. Mokhtar Chaouachi last week presented his credentials to the Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos.
The ceremony on 18 May was attended by the agency's Chief for External Relations and Inter Agency Affairs, Mr. Chris Mensah and the Diplomatic Advisor to the Executive Director, Ms. Aranzazu Banon.
The meeting focuess on the political situation in Tunisia, and cooperation between the North African country and UN-HABITAT.
The Ambassador praised the peaceful way in which the transition in Tunisia is taking place and referred to similarities with other historical transition processes, such as Spain. He emphasized that Tunisia would continue its effective policy in housing and human settlements and said the country looked forward to a continued cooperation with UN-HABITAT
The Executive Director noted that Tunisia's urban policies had always been among the most exemplary in Africa, playing a leading role as models together with other African countries.
Dr. Clos recalled the cooperation projects implemented between various Tunisian municipalities and his own city, Barcelona at the time when he served as Mayor. He said he wanted to strengthen cooperation between UN-HABITAT and Tunisia.
The Ambassador renewed an invitation to the Executive Director to visit Tunisia and reiterated the importance of collaborating and working together with UN-HABITAT. Dr. Clos cited his interest in strengthening the cooperation between UNHABITAT and Tunisia as an important partner and expressed his intention to visit the country very soon. |
