| Improving urban public spaces |

San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico , 5 Dec 11
UN-HABITAT has formally notified the Federal Government of Mexico that it will support efforts to institutionalize the recovery of urban public spaces, and to share its experiences with other countries in the region and globally.
The announcement follows a three-day seminar 22-25 November on inclusive public spaces for sustainable cities which drew more than 350 local and international delegates.

UN-HABITAT is pleased to announce the 2011 Habitat Scroll of Honour Awards to the following recipients. This is the most prestigious award given by the United Nations in recognition of work carried out in the field of human settlements development. The aim of the award is to honour individuals and institutions instrumental in improving the living conditions in urban centres around the world. For the first time, UN-HABITAT is recognising a set of good practices as well. |

The Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, signed the “Seal the Deal” climate change petition to reminding world leaders to negotiate a fair, balanced and effective agreement at the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Copenhagen in December 2009. |

| US Mayors pass resolution supporting African Development |

Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, attended the annual US Conference of Mayors in Chicago and called upon them to provide support to the Commission for Africa's conclusions and to join the Commissioners in calling on world leaders to act on the recommendations. She went on to emphasise to the assembled mayors from across the United States that the report highlighted the problems of rapid urbanisation in Africa, which was considered to be the second most important challenge facing Africa after the AIDS pandemic.
