A historic four day global meeting, called “Youth 21 – Building for Change”, and bringing together over 250 youth with governments, UN agencies, researchers, private sector and civil society closed in Nairobi at the weekend with the release of the Nairobi Statement, a roadmap for the greater inclusion of youth in the UN system.  
Improving urban public spaces

UN-HABITAT has formally notified the Federal Government of Mexico that it will support efforts to institutionalize the recovery of urban public spaces, and to share its experiences with other countries in the region and globally.

The announcement follows a three-day seminar 22-25 November on inclusive public spaces for sustainable cities which drew more than 350 local and international delegates.

This is the most prestigious award given by the United Nations in recognition of work carried out in the field of human settlements development. The aim of the award is to honour individuals and institutions instrumental in improving the living conditions in urban centres around the world. For the first time, UN-HABITAT is recognising a set of good practices as well.

Professor Martha Schteingart of El Colegio de Mexico, (Mexico City) is the winner of this year’s UN-HABITAT Lecture Award. The Award recognises outstanding and sustained contribution in the field of human settlements.
Professor Schteingart delivered the winning lecture entitled “Urban Problems and Policies in Latin America: Truths and Fallacies” on 4 October, 2007 during the international conference on ‘The State of Safety and Security in World Cities, 2007’ in Monterrey, Mexico.
