A new UN-Habitat City Resilience Profiling Programme

UN-Habitat announced on Thursday that it is seeking city partners to pilot a new integrated urban planning and management model to help cities build reslience against disasters such as the recent superstorm Sandy which crashed through coastlines from the Caribbean and north America's Atlantic seaboard, or tsunamis and earthquakes.

Assisting local authorities in Iraq

UN-HABITAT and six United Nations agencies have teamed up with the Government of Iraq to launch a new initiative aimed at boosting the capacities of local authorities to carry through development plans in partnership with the private sector and local communites.

The programme will be conducted in Sulaymaniyah, Babel, and the Marshlands in a bid to stimulate local economic development and improve local infrastructure and basic services, the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said in a news release.
UN-HABITAT loses a staff member in Iraq

Mr. Nazhad Mustafa, Officer-in-Charge of the UN-HABITAT office in Erbil, Northern Iraq, Iraq passed away on 1 October 2007 at the age of 61 after a brief illness. Mr. Nazhad, a civil engineer and quantity surveyor joined UN-HABITAT in 1998 at the beginning of the Oil-for-Food Programme and has ever since made a very positive contribution to UN-HABITAT's rehabilitation programmes Iraq. He was a valued and respected senior member of the UN-HABITAT Iraq team. He leaves his wife, two daughters and two sons.

Work Begins on UN-HABITAT Housing Rehabilitation Project in Najaf

On March, 16th, 2006, UN-HABITAT, with funding provided by the Government of Japan through the UNDG Trust Fund, started work on the rehabilitation of 44 houses for poor families in the Al-Ansar Neighborhood in the City of Najaf. The rehabilitation works are being carried out by a small local contractor under the supervision of UN-HABITAT national consultants.

Mr. Paul Volcker and the Independent Inquiry Committee (IIC) released on 9 January 2005, on their website, 58 internal audit reports on the Oil-for-Food Programme (OFFP) and the UN Compensation Commission. In addition, they put out a briefing paper on the audit reports. Five of the 58 audit reports published are on UN-HABITAT operations.

Japan assists UN-HABITAT rehabilitation in Iraq

UN-HABITAT’s activities in Iraq, received a boost when the Government of Japan announced today that, along with other UN agencies, three of UN-HABITAT’s projects will receive earmarked financial support as part of the US$ 360 million deposited by the Japanese Government into the UN Development Group Iraq Trust Fund on 26th March 2004.
New urban rehabilitation plan for Iraq

UN-HABITAT and officials of interim government in Iraq have agreed to embark on a new Urban and Housing Rehabilitation Programme under which UN-HABITAT will help promote sustainable post-war reconstruction.
