African youth seek greater role in decision making

African youth leaders told a United Nations expert group meeting on urban youth employment in Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, that young people ought to have a stronger say in decisions affecting their employment prospects.
Sustainable Mobility: Bicycles for Health Care Workers in Kenya

In order to address the growing mobility needs of HIV/AIDS Health Care Workers in Kenya, UN-HABITAT in conjunction with Rotary Club International, the Netherlands Chapter, and the Tour d'Afrique donated 14 new mountain bicycles to women's health care service providers who are affiliated with the National Council of Women of Kenya. According to UNAIDS reports, women are disproportionately vulnerable to HIV and they account for half of the 40 million people living with HIV or AIDS around the world.
Kenya pledges to work with partners to harmonise land activities

Major initiative to improve the slums of Kenya

Kenya’s Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing, Mr. Raila Odinga, on Wednesday announced the Kenya Slum Upgrading Project, a major initiative aimed at improving the conditions of the slum dwellers in Nairobi, who make up over 60 per cent of the city's population.
Finland gives 750,000 euros for Kenyan slum upgrading

The government of Finland has donated 750,000 euros for a pilot project to help UN-HABITAT promote sustainable neighbourhoods for Kenya’s urban poor. A signing ceremony on Tuesday at the Finnish embassy residence was addressed by Kenyan Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing, Raila Odinga, Minister of Lands and Settlements Amos Kimunya, the Finnish Chargé d’Affaires Kimmo Laukkanen and UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka.
From the back streets to the catwalk

Children from the slums and back streets of Nairobi swapped their everyday wear for the latest high fashion to join Miss Universe and Miss Kenya on the catwalk at a fundraising evening to highlight the plight of street children. The 12 July event was arranged as part of the Exodus Initiative of the German Foundation for World Population (DSW).
Plight of women in slums highlighted at International Women’s Day awards ceremony

At the Woman of the Year award in Nairobi on 7 March, ten women were honoured for their selflessness, courage and dedication to their communities. Congratulating the winners and nominees for the awards, UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka a key speaker at the occasion, highlighted the burden of women in slums and shanty settlements where percent of the city’s population live.
Tibaijuka calls for globalization to solve shelter problems of local people

Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Under Secretary-General of the UN, and the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT stressed that there was a need to make globalization work for local people, create decent jobs, and provide decent shelter for the urban poor who are stranded in the slums and squatter settlements surrounding the cities of Africa. Mrs. Tibaijuka was speaking as the Chairperson of the second session, at the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization (WCSDG) held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 6-7 February 2003.
UN-HABITAT and UNEP working closely together

Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, this week told the 22nd governing council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UN-HABITAT’s sister organisation, that the two Nairobi-based UN bodies would work with a “profound sense of common purpose” to strengthen the nexus between the natural and human-made evironments of the world.
