UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka this week received a standing ovation at the United Nations great hall in Nairobi when she formally took leave of the Committee of Permanent Representatives which acts on behalf of the governments overseeing UN-HABITAT.

The UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund is growing increasingly popular with youth groups across the developing world judging by a 40 percent rise in applications over last year. Among regions showing the largest increase in applications are Latin America, the Middle East and Central Asia.

In a first-of-its-kind event in Africa, builders and housing ministry officials from all over the continent are converging on Nairobi this week to explore ways to encourage ‘green’ building in their own countries. The three day conference organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) titled “Promoting Green Building Rating in Africa” will take place from the 4th to the 6th of May 2010.

Following the success of the first phase of the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Initiative, the European Investment Bank has provided a grant of EUR 50,000 to UN-HABITAT to help extend the programme to larger towns in the Lake Victoria region.
