Urban road planning support to Garowe Municipality  
Somaliland, 6 May 13
Garowe Municipality, assisted by UN-Habitat, has completed the implementation of the first phase of the pilot project Development of a Road Network Development Plan and Road Demarcation for Garowe. The project has resulted in the development of the Road Demarcation Development Phase Plan 2012–2035; during the first phase, around 7 km of roads, as new extensions of the main road, were demarcated to secure the future routes from encroachment by informal building construction.
Geographic information system project completed in Gardho

After the successful geographic information system (GIS) property survey and database development intervention in Garowe District, Puntland, UN-Habitat Somalia has established a GIS property database for Gardho District. Gardho, like other districts in Puntland, lacks an accurate, up-to-date land and property information system, which is crucial for town planning and revenue collection.

Garbage collection service for four pilot districts in Mogadishu

As part of the multi-partner, European Union-funded project Sustainable Employment Creation and Improved Livelihoods for Vulnerable Communities in Mogadishu (SECIL), which is directed by UN-Habitat Somalia, a sustainable solid waste collection system will be set up in the four pilot districts of Hamarweyne, Hamarjajab, Shingani, and Waberi.

Gabiley District Profile completed as Puntland profiles finalized

In early August, the UN-Habitat team produced the Gabiley District Profile. The Economic and Development Subcommittee of the District Council supported this endeavour, with assistance from the Executive Secretary, the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor, the head of the Administration and Finance Department, and local government staff, including heads of technical departments.

Improving governance through waste management  
Puntland, Bossaso, 7 Nov 12
Solid waste management projects and a solar street lighting project are improving sanitation, hygiene, health, environmental conditions, and living standards in three municipalities in Puntland – Bossaso, Gardho, and Garowe. The projects address service delivery in the solid waste sector and increase the protection of vulnerable urban populations through better street lighting. These activities are under the UN Joint Programme on Local Governance and Decentralized Service Delivery, and it was established that only those municipalities with functional councils could receive the grant of USD 75,000.
Mogadishu markets rehabilitated

SAACID has been partnering with UN-Habitat since 2005 to build local government capacity in all 16 districts in Mogadishu and rehabilitate high-priority public sector infrastructure throughout the city. Barduuro Market in Hamarweyne District was built in 1972, under the regime of Siad Barre.
