Governments tackle targets on water, sanitation and human settlements

The meeting of the Commission on Sustainable Development’s 13th session (CSD-13) 11 to 22 April 2005, marks the first major policy-setting conference since the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2002. The meeting follows that of the Governing Council of UN-HABITAT in Nairobi, Kenya, last week.
Talking water and sanitation in Madhya Pradesh

A group of state decision-makers, municipal officials, urban planners and representatives of various regional and international organizations joined the mayors of Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior and Jabalpur at a two-day meeting in Bhopal to discuss the implementation of UN-HABITAT’s Water for Asian Cities Programme in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Ashe, chair of 13th session on the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and dealt with the myriad challenges facing water and sanitation access among the world’s poor. In the words of Dr. Ashe, the Dialogue and subsequent events would all make important contributions to the policy session of CSD next year.
Sustainable Urbanisation

Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor of Lagos, West Africa’s biggest city, opened Wednesday’s dialogue on sustainable urbanization at the World Urban Forum with a call on national governments to commit more resources to cities so that they can cope with the challenges of globalisation.
