Finland gives 750,000 euros for Kenyan slum upgrading

The government of Finland has donated 750,000 euros for a pilot project to help UN-HABITAT promote sustainable neighbourhoods for Kenya’s urban poor. A signing ceremony on Tuesday at the Finnish embassy residence was addressed by Kenyan Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing, Raila Odinga, Minister of Lands and Settlements Amos Kimunya, the Finnish Chargé d’Affaires Kimmo Laukkanen and UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka.

Poverty-stricken urban communities in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, are getting a new lease of life with the launch by Prime Minister Hun Sen of a new secure land tenure policy.
Government of Kenya and UN-HABITAT to Upgrade Slums

Honourable Raila Odinga, the new Minister for Roads, Public works and Housing of the Government of Kenya and Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the "Slum Upgrading Programme for Kenya". The programme hopes to improve housing, infrastructure services and the overall livelihoods of people living and working in informal settlements. One of the major goals is to ensure that the poor are given some form of security of tenure so that they can participate in the improvement of the urban environment. The programme will begin by working on slum upgrading in Nairobi and Kisumu, the lessons learned will then be replicated in other urban areas in Kenya.
UN-HABITAT and IDB SET TO COOPERATE ON HOUSING AND URBAN IMPROVEMENT IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN

The Executive Director and the head of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) signed a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation between their agencies to support the improvement of housing, urban infrastructure and services in Latin America and the Caribbean.
