UN-Habitat announced on Thursday that it is seeking city partners to pilot a new integrated urban planning and management model to help cities build reslience against disasters such as the recent superstorm Sandy which crashed through coastlines from the Caribbean and north America's Atlantic seaboard, or tsunamis and earthquakes.

UN-Habitat is seeking proposals for candidates to serve on its Advisory Group on Gender Issues established to advise the Executive Director on all matters related to gender mainstreaming in the agency's work. The Group will also provide strategic guidance and policy advice.

The first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Wangari Maathai of Kenya, died overnight at a Nairobi hospital. Her organization, the Green Belt Movement, said Wangari had been undergoing cancer treatment. She was 71.
