UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, last week told a special panel of the United States Senate that 72 percent of the urban populations in Africa still live in slums and informal settlements.

A gathering of countries at the United Nations this week which approved the platform for action for women at the historic Beijing conference 10 years ago was urged to do more for the plight of millions of women mired in poverty in urban slums around the world.

Mr. Miloon Kothari, Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing at the UN Commission on Human Rights, decried the uphill struggle by women in poverty stricken communities against violence and discrimination, saying governments had to improve legislation to ensure adequate shelter and other rights for women.

Three Asian cities have been named as winners of UN-HABITAT awards for their women-friendly policies. The cities are Cebu and Naga in the Philippines, and Visakhapatnam in India. The award ceremony marking International Women’s Day was held with the mayors of the three cities on Monday, 8 March 2004.

Delegates from around the world gathered at UN-HABITAT Headquarters Nairobi on Tuesday for an Expert Group meeting on Gender and Women’s issues in Human Settlements to ensure that problems facing women and children are not overlooked as governments make new efforts to improve the lives of urban slum dwellers. The three-day meeting was organised by UN-HABITAT with financial support from Norway.
