European Investment Bank supports Lake Victoria initiative
	Nairobi, 16 Feb 10 Following the success of the first phase of the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Initiative, the European Investment Bank has provided a grant of EUR 50,000 to UN-HABITAT to help extend the programme to larger towns in the Lake Victoria region.


Rapid urbanization a major challenge for Africa
	Wilton Park, 16 Feb 10 Five years after the Commission for Africa presented its recommendations to world leaders at the G8 Summit in Gleneagles and five years before the target date for the Millennium Development Goals, a conference was held during the first week of February at Wiston House in Wilton Park to focus on the challenges facing Africa.


Improving water delivery in Asia
	Bangkok, 16 Feb 10 USAID’s ECO-Asia project, a regional environmental programme based in Thailand, is offering grants of up to USD 10,000 to any private organization, NGO or academic institutions working in countries eligible for USAID that can demonstrate how they can improve water services in the region.

	Nairobi, 15 Feb 10 Youth-led organizations in developing countries working to improve the lives of young people and their communities can now seek financing for their projects through the UN-HABITAT Urban Youth Fund. The Fund will provide grants for innovative projects that promote employment, good governance, shelter and secure tenure.

	Port-au-Prince, 11 Feb 10 UN-HABITAT said on Wednesday it was stepping up plans to help an estimated 2 million people left homeless in Haiti after the most devastating earthquake to hit the Caribbean island nation in 250 years.

	Ramallah, 11 Feb 10 UN-HABITAT has unveiled a new Programme Document for the occupied Palestinian territory covering the years 2010 and 2011 at a seminar it held on the challenge of sustainable urbanization and the need for effective spatial planning. The gathering was chaired by the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Dr. Mohammad Shtayyeh.

	Brussels, 11 Feb 10 UN-HABITAT and the European Union’s Committee of the Regions on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at improving sustainable urban development in Europe and sharing best practices with the developing world.
