Practitioners from the fields of design, planning and architecture gathered at the United Nations Pavilion yesterday to share ideas on building more sustainable, resourceful, and user-friendly cities. The event chaired by Prof. Ezio Mancini of Politecnico di Milano, Italy was part of a three-day conference taking place in Shanghai.

UN-HABITAT and WWF have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure a better protection of the Virunga National Park , a World Heritage site in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The two agencies made the announcement on Tuesday.

UN-HABITAT on Monday announced the winners of its 2010 Scroll of Honour, the UN's most prestigious award in human settlements development. The awards, which honour individuals and institutions instrumental in improving living conditions in towns and cities, will be bestowed on World Habitat Day.

When a series of earthquakes hit Karonga District in December 2009 leaving in its wake four deaths, damage to schools and over 10,000 houses affecting 24,000 people, the post relief challenge was how to support the communities to recover and with specific regard to shelter, how to ensure that households and communities are able to build back better and safer.
