UN World Summit prioritizes slum prevention and upgrading

World leaders at the United Nations World Summit resolved to achieve significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers by 2020 and recognized the urgent need for increased resources for affordable housing and housing-related infrastructure.
Major Japanese funding for human settlements upgrading in Afghanistan

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security have announced that they will provide over 3 million US dollars towards upgrading homes and urban community facilities in informal settlements in the three Afghan cities of Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad.
UN-HABITAT begins talks on slum upgrading in Iraq

The government of Finland has donated 750,000 euros for a pilot project to help UN-HABITAT promote sustainable neighbourhoods for Kenya’s urban poor. A signing ceremony on Tuesday at the Finnish embassy residence was addressed by Kenyan Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing, Raila Odinga, Minister of Lands and Settlements Amos Kimunya, the Finnish Chargé d’Affaires Kimmo Laukkanen and UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka.
