Secretary-General to press urban agenda at Rio +20

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday told a high-level delegation of mayors, local and regional authorities that he would ensure rapid urbanisation around the world takes high priority on the Rio +20 agenda because the battle for sustainability would be won or lost in cities.

Burkina Faso celebrated World Habitat Day for a whole month this year for the 26th time. Highlights includedthe broadcast of a documentary film on flooding, with posters around the capital, and a message by Mr. Yacouba Barry, Minister of Housing and Urbanism on climate change. A public convention was held during which a storm water project at the Bangr ' Wéogo city park in Ouagadougou was launched, thanks to funding of USD 12.6 million (XOF 6 billion) from the West African Development Bank. Urban Climate Change Adaptation Course concludes in Korea

Urban planners and decision-makers from 10 Asian countries concluded a course on cities and climate change adaptation. The course which focused on vulnerability assessment and climate change action plans helps cities improve their planning and response to climate change.

The recently drafted national climate change action plan or NCCAP seeks to spell out a ridge-to-reef strategy to bring about sustainable climate change actions. In line with the NCCAP, HUDCC is working with UN-HABITAT and other government agencies in defining details on processes and techniques to strengthen the poor’s housing and settlement as they face the downward risks from the ridge like flooding and landslide, and the inward risks from the sea like storm surge, strong typhoons and sea level rise.

New African cities climate change initiative

UN-HABITAT this week announced a new drive to raise awareness in African cities about climate change problems so that proper mitigation and adaptation plans can be put in place. A pilot programme for local authorities will start in five cities – Mombasa (Kenya), Kigali (Rwanda), St Louis (Senegal), Walvis Bay (Namibia), and Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso).
