Italian government comes to the rescue of Somalia IDPs  
Nairobi, 14 May 08
The Italian government this week announced a donation of EUR 600,000 to UN-HABITAT which will go towards improving the living conditions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Somalia.
In a statement of appreciation to the Italians, UN-HABITAT said shelter and settlement was an important component in the agency’s response to humanitarian and emergency needs in the Somali regions. The new funding will go towards an ongoing IDP project currently financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) in Jowhar/Baidoa in south-centre Somalia.
New Turkish envoy presents credentials to Tibaijuka

The UN-HABITAT Sustainable Cities Programme targets on the improvement of living conditions of urban dwellers in developing countries by introducing a bottom-up planning approach. To improve the flow of information among the different stakeholders involved and to enable the local community to participate in urban planning, some Sustainable Cities Programme partner cities set up a Geographic Information System-based Environmental Management Information System.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China has confirmed that the Fourth Session of the World Urban Forum, which is to be held in the city of Nanjing, will now take place between 3-7 November 2008. UN-HABITAT Executive Director Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka thanked the Chinese government saying that it was a great honour to have them host this increasingly popular event in the UN calendar, especially as the meeting is dedicated to discussing urban issues and China is now one of the fastest urbanizing countries in the world.

UN-HABITAT receives USD 2 million from Britain for Pakistan reconstruction

UN-HABITAT this week received additional funding of USD 2 million from the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom to strengthen its training and technical assistance for the victims of a Pakistan earthquake who lost their homes.
Kenya youth launch anti-violence campaign
