Australia aids Sri Lankan towns to be resilient to disasters

The Government of Australia is providing USD 1,039,900 to improve planning and community resilience in four disaster prone cities

UN-Habitat and partners in second phase of housing Sri Lankan conflict victims

UN-Habitat is extending its partnership with the European Union (EU), Government of Australia (AusAID) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to implement the second phase of the housing recovery project for conflict affected families. The project “Improving Living Conditions in Returnee Areas of Sri Lanka through Housing” will be implemented over the next 30 months- to mid-2015- in the North and East. The project will assist 4,000 conflict affected families in the districts of Killinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Batticaloa to reconstruct and repair their damaged houses.
A new UN-Habitat City Resilience Profiling Programme

UN-Habitat announced on Thursday that it is seeking city partners to pilot a new integrated urban planning and management model to help cities build reslience against disasters such as the recent superstorm Sandy which crashed through coastlines from the Caribbean and north America's Atlantic seaboard, or tsunamis and earthquakes.
Asian mayors converge in Bangkok for climate change workshop

Bahrain provides USD 1 million for UN-Habitat Palestinian support

The Government of Kingdom of Bahrain has made a donation of USD 1 million to the Technical Cooperation Trust Fund of the Special Human Settlements Programme for the Palestinian People. The contribution came in response to a resolution of Member States in the Governing Council which oversees UN-Habitat’s work programme and budget.

United Arab Emirates to build 1,000 homes for Sri Lanka tsunami victims

The Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates this week signed two agreements with UN-HABITAT to provide funding for the construction of 1,000 houses in areas of Galle, Trincomalee, Ampara and Kattankudy devastated by the December 2004 tsunami killer wave. The agreements were signed by Mr. Abdullah Al-Mahmood of Red Crescent Society, UAE and Mr. Lalith Lankatillake, Regional Advisor of UN-HABITAT.
