WORLD HABITAT DAY, 3rd October 2011: Cities and Climate Change

UN-HABITAT has announced the winners of the 2011 Scroll of Honour Award, the United Nation's most prestigious award in human settlements development which honours individuals and institutions instrumental in improving living conditions in towns and cities. The winners from Australia, Cuba, Malaysia, Namibia, Russia and the United States, will receive their award on World Habitat Day in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

 

A photo and video campaign ‘1 minute to save my city’, has been launched to harness ideas on saving our cities from the effects of climate change. Join the campaign by sharing your videos and photos depicting how our cities are contributing to climate change, how climate change is affecting our cities, how cities can mitigate and adapt to climate change, and how we can contribute to this.

 
Aguascalientes, Mexico  
Thousands are expected in the Aguascalientes Theatre on 3 October for the Global Observance of World Habitat Day. In a recent major launch of World Habitat Day in Mexico City, Heriberto Félix Guerra, Mexico's Minister for Social Development (SEDESOL) announced that Aguascalientes will host this year's global World Habitat Day celebrations. The event will have high level participation from global, regional and national entities representing the public and private sectors, academia and civil society organizations dealing sustainable urban development. Highlights include an award ceremony for presentations of the Habitat Scroll of Honour and Good Practices the World Habitat Awards and national best practices from Mexico. From 4-6 October, the University of Aguascalientes will hold a Congress where leading experts will discuss the World Habitat Day 2011 theme of Cities and Climate Change with over 500 students from Mexican and other global Universities.

 
 



 


Hundreds of local and national governments, academic institutions, civil society organizations including youth groups, are among the stakeholders organizing activities and events to raise awareness and celebrate World Habitat Day in their cities.
