This publication is a case study of five countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, namely Cote d’lvoire, Kenya, Nigeria, Zaire and Zimbabwe. All the case studies point out the important role played by traditional "informal" institutions and community organizations and show the extent to which traditional institutions and community organisations are contributing to the management of secondary cities in Sub Saharan Africa, particularly with regard to the provision of urban services. The book provides information on patterns of urban management in secondary cities and considers the policy implications using traditional and community based institutions to provide urban services.
